Eden Visits U. S. to Get American
Views of Peril to European Freedom

NEW YORK, Dec. 10 (UP)

Anthony Eden who resigned as British foreign minister because of his government's policy of "dealing with dictators," disclosed that he was visiting the United States to listen and learn the American viewpoint on perils of European democracy.

He said that Great Britain was acutely conscious of its own perils and was resolved to stand firm.

Today, he and Mrs. Eden will see the sights and tonight they will look over some American night clubs.

He addressed the annual dinner of the National Association of Manufacturers last night.

It was his first public appearance in the United States where his great-great-grandfather, Robert Eden, had presided as last colonial governor of Maryland before the American revolution.

His defense of democratic rights and principles was spirited. He discussed the Englishman's place in the "gathering storms of world strife" but did not attempt to prescribe any course of action for the United States.

Of Great Britain he said: "We know that we are destined in our land and in our generation to live in a period of emergency of which one can see the end. If throughout that testing time, however long or short it be, we held fast to our faith, cradle it in stone and set steel to defend it we can yet hand on our inheritance of freedom intact to the generations that are to come."
