PASS-GIVING A PERNICIOUS PRACTICE
We hope that the action of the state
corporation commission in finding a
railway company a nominal sum for
giving a free pass to a sheriff will not
end the matter. Passes were given by
the same company to other sheriffs.
Other companies may have engaged in
the same practice. Such procedure
is manifestly against public policy, is
in violation of the spirit of the constitution
and ought to be stopped.
While it has not yet appeared in
any published statements that there
was official corruption, actual or intended,
in any instance, there is too
much opportunity in pass-giving for a
public service corporation to obtain
an undue advantage in matters requiring
the exercise of official discretion.
That was the thought in the minds of
the members of the convention which
adopted the prohibition contained in
the state constitution and in the minds
of the people when they gave their
approval to the change.
There's a quarantine against Florida
sweet potatoes, but no Virginia editor
seems to be worrying.
Denmark must get food or starve,
its government announces. Has Denmark
made known its needs to its
great and good friend of Potsdam?
Camouflage is a regular practice of
some folks about the time when
monthly bills come due.
Along about 1925 some exempted
men who would like to hold office
will have to oil up their explainers.
Hoover went to New York, stayed
0 days and hurried back to Washington.
He may have been looking for
food.
A writer who admits he knows
nearly everything now inquires, "Will
women fight?"
No, he isn't married.
They aren't all slackers in Chicago.
Four boys from 14 to 16 years got
into the army by claiming they were
18.
A ship loaded with Scotch whiskey
and bound for New York was sunk by
a German U-boat.
Yet recruiting continues to decline in New York.
"The Shame of the City" is a new
melodrama from Chicago. Wait a
minute! Mayor Thompson is NOT the
leading man.
Don't get excited about the sailors
who were mixed up in a fight at Cork
the other day.
They were merely
walking around with some pretty
Irish girls when they met some Irish
boys.
Enough said.
