Curtis MacDougall, the Northwestern University journalism professor who ran for U.S. Senator on the Progressive ticket in Illinois last November, will keynote the Progressive's Cook County legislative convention Sunday, Jan. 9.
George Cermak, the party's county chairman, will gavel the all-day session to order promptly at 10 a.m. in Temple Hall, 330 S. Marshfield Ave.
William Miller, state director, announced that conference planners had omitted scheduling any major speeches, in order to make sure the several hundred delegates representing ward and township organizations would be able to participate fully in a "rank-and-file convention."
Hot debates are expected as the delegates try to narrow the field of legislative issues to decide the single campaign on which the county's Progressive Party will center main attention in coming months.
Sharp differences of opinion have developed over whether repeal of the sales tax should be the primary campaign. A state constitutional convention and enactment of a state FEPC are among other issues that have been suggested for placement at the top of the legislative agenda for Illinois Progressives.
Sidney Ordower, newly appointed legislative director, will present the legislative committee's report, while Miller will offer the administrative report.
Bernard Lucas, int'l rep., CIO Longshoremen and Warehousemen, will report for the trade union committee, and Fred Ptashne will give the nationalities council report.
