Letter from Mr. Clay.—The Herald of yesterday, publishes some extracts from a private letter of Mr. Clay, to a gentleman of this city. In relation to the state of the country he says—"I should be glad to witness a termination of the violence, both at the North and the South, which threatens—in words, if not in fact—the existence of our Union. But my confidence is strong that the Union will be maintained against all assailants, in whatever quarter they may appear."
He contemplates remaining in the quiet of his home till the assembling of the Senate again calls him to his public duties. He writes:
"I have been so much from home during the last eighteen months, that I believe I shall not visit the East this summer, agreeable and beneficial as it might be. I expect to remain at home, in as much quiet as I can here enjoy, and take care of my health."
