C. H. White believes in making an effort to find natural gas nearer home than Warfield, Ky. He is willing and ready to put some of his cash into the scheme, and intends to make an effort to raise enough money to sink a well to the depth of 1,000 feet. Several business men have signified their willingness to join in the enterprise. It will require $3,000 or $4,000 to sink the well, and Mr. White thinks the amount can be raised. When the well at Pogue's distillery was being dug years ago, for the old oil works, a small vein of gas was found at a depth of only eighty-five feet. In view of the many advantages that would result from the finding of the article in paying quantities, the scheme certainly deserves consideration. If a big vein of natural gas could be found near here it would give Maysville the "boom" so much desired. As Mr. White remarked, it would only be a few dollars lost anyhow, if the attempt failed. It is thought that $4,000 can be raised, and an effort will be made, as we stated before, to organize a company with that amount of capital, in shares of fifty dollars each. Suppose twenty or thirty of our citizens should put up the money, sink the well and find gas in paying quantities, what a bonanza they would have? If they failed to strike it, they would only come out losers to the amount of $100 or $200 each at most.
