CENSUS RECORDS IN PERIL

Feared Figures Dating From 1790
Destroyed by Fire in Department
of Commerce Building.

Washington, Jan. 11.—Original and
priceless census records dating from
the first census of 1790 are believed
to have been destroyed by a fire in
the basement of the Department of
Commerce building.

The records are the original manuscripts and were based on house to
house canvasses which were made in
the early days of the republic.

P. J. Fitzgerald, chief clerk of the
census bureau, states that while it is
unlikely that the fire has touched the
records there is no question that water has destroyed a large part of them.
