I. U. STUDENTS ARE GOOD SOLDIERS

Iowa City, Aug. 8.--University of Iowa students are good soldiers. This is shown in the government report just received by President T. H. Macbride from Washington, D. C. Captain H. L. Laubach, official inspector, strongly praises the University of Iowa regiment. He says, "the student soldiers are intelligent, neat, well mannered, and are apparently fond of military life." His inspection was made last spring.

The report of the inspector further states that "the review was well executed, the manual of arms was good and the marching was very good." In regard to the equipment, Captain Laubach said, "Uniforms were generally in good condition, although there were a few in need of repair, and some torn or soiled gloves were noted. The rifles are in a generally excellent condition, very little dirt and less rust being noted. Other equipment is in very good condition."

"The close order drills by company and battalion show that this character of instruction has been carried out to a satisfactory extent," was the statement made regarding the drill. "The extended order drills and formation of an advance guard were well executed. There are no grounds available nearby for the execution of field exercises and so a situation was outlined to the cadet officers and they were questioned as to what they would do under the conditions given. It is believed from results obtained, that they would act intelligently and properly in the field."

The excellence of the report is considered by the university authorities to reflect a great credit upon Lieutenant Robert T. Phinney, commandant of the university regiment.
