One Person Killed and Several Injured.
NEW YORK, May 13. - The runaway accident in Central Park, Saturday, has proved quite a sad affair. The parties in the carriage were Mrs. Harriet F. McDowell, widow of the late Rev. Alexander F. McDowell of Albany; Mrs. Renwick, the wife of Mr. Wm. C. Renwick of Battell & Renwick, 163 Front street, and her little daughter and Miss Grace Fassett of Albany, a niece of Mrs. McDowell. The coachman, when the horses started to run, was thrown from the box and the wheels passed over him, breaking his arm and shoulder blade. The frightened horses then started at a fearful speed up the drive with the ladies. The latter pushed the carriage door open, and one of them, holding in her arms the little girl, sprang out. She fell upon the back of her head upon the ground. About fifty yards further on another of the women sprang from the carriage and fell prone upon the ground. The horses were then stopped by a party of gentlemen, and Miss Fassett, who remained in the carriage, was rescued uninjured. Lieutenant Corcoran of the Central Park Police, who witnessed the accident, hastened up and found Mrs. Renwick and Mrs. McDowell lying unconscious where they had fallen. He had them both conveyed to the Presbyterian Hospital at Seventy-second street and Madison avenue. Mrs. McDowell died on the way to the hospital. Mrs. Renwick died to-day.
