Full Text

There was an exciting race at Bedford park, Evansville, Ind., last week. The conditions were that John James, using 10 horses, should ride 20 miles, James to remount every half-mile, against Bedford's 10 horses, Bedford to be allowed two riders, one already mounted and ready for a start as his predecessor came under the string. Bedford's riders weighed 95 and 125 pounds, while James's weight was 161 pounds. The contest was very close until the last half of the tenth mile, when James's horse flew the track and threw him heavily. He was up in a moment, however, and again speeding away. The time lost gave his opponent an advantage which he could not recover, but came under the string only 50 yards behind in a 20-mile dash. The time was 46 minutes.
