OPPOSED TO SALES
TAX IN TERRITORY
Six resolutions were passed at
the CIO
Territorial
Convention,
which is now in its third day of
session Juneau.
Resolutions
which include recommendations to
the Territorial Legislature includ-
ed: opposition to sales tax on the
basis that it is discriminatory; in-
crease of teachers' salary to cor-
respond to the high cost of liv-
ing; and support of Statehood.
The legislation which the Terri-
torial Department of Labor will
introduce at the regular session
was endorsed by the convention.
Henry Benson, Territorial Com-
missioner of Labor, outlined his
program at the Wednesday session.
One amendment to Benson's legis-
lation passed the convention. On
Fishermen's Accident and Sickness
Insurance, Benson's plan calls for
funds to be raised by a license sys-
tem. The CIO resolved that the
funds be collected by a poundage
tax system at the processor
or
handler level.
The Safety Committee reported
on the proposed Territorial Safety
Code. The Code was approved in
its entirety and a few additions will
be presented at the hearings. which
are scheduled to be held in Ju-
neau next week.
The union men agreed to set
up a CIO Industrial Council, which
will be an overall Territorial or-
ganization and will be over the
three Branch Councils and all CIO
locals. who wish to affiliate with
it.
