The Romantic visit of a Chicago Young Man to the Valley.
On Thursday a young man from Chicago appeared at the Adams Hotel and registered with a hand which trembled with the emotion which attends only moments of the gravest importance in a young man's life. The name is not published, for the reason that it could not be deciphered by the reporter or any one else. Before his room was assigned him the young man rushed to the telephone and began a protracted conversation with a young lady whose name must remain a silent part of this story. He talked softly, but there was a noticeable excitement which carried some of his words to a reporter who stood at the register trying to read the name which had been written before the smoky city.
"I must see you tonight," said the young man almost passionately. "Think of the distance I came to see you think of"—out just then the porter cried, "All aboard for the northbound S. F., P. & P. train," and when the porter finished the young man was standing at the phone, listening attentively to the words of his sweetheart. "Well," he said, "I will come early in the morning, and you must be ready." The receiver was jammed into the holder, and the young Chicago man retired to his room, first leaving an order at the desk for a carriage to be ready at the hotel door promptly at 6:30 in the morning.
The young man was waiting at the hotel door when the interested reporter appeared at the hotel the next morning. In a few minutes a carriage drove up, and in another minute a second carriage appeared, which was occupied by a minister. The young man entered the first carriage and directed the course of the second carriage through the streets toward the outskirts of the city. The reporter furnished the vanguard of the procession.
The young man spurred the driver into a Chicago hack race, which kept the driver of the other carriage in a state of anxiety every time a corner was reached. But the leader took a straight course up Grand avenue until one of the suburban settlements, which contains the home of a prominent young lady of the valley was reached.
The young man and the preacher remained at the house long enough for a marriage ceremony to be performed, but whether it took place or not remains a mystery.
That evening the young man disappeared, and on the incoming train was the father of the young lady whom he came all the way from Chicago to see. The arrival of the old gentleman no doubt put a damper on the young man's plans. Whether he was married during his visit to the house could not be learned. "He is sure a thoroughbred," said one of the cabbies. "He gave us a hot pace, and I hope he got the girl."
Whether he won a bride or not, the fact remains that he threw a $20 gold piece at the cabbies with a cheerful look, which he did not wear the night before.
