Fails to 'Crash' Presidential Gate

Rambouillet, France, Aug. 28. (AP) -Doris Stevens, American feminist leader, was taken into custody by the police today when she and several other feminists tried to "crash the gate" at the presidential chateau here to present an equal rights petition to President Doumergue.

In addition to Miss Stevens the police detained one other woman.

The group staged a demonstration outside the big iron gate leading to the Chateau where the plenipotentiaries who yesterday signed the Kellogg-Briand pact were at lunch with the president.

Miss Stevens is chairman of the committee on International action of the National woman's party of the United States. For days the committee has been trying to induce the treaty signers to give them "an hour" in which to set forth their arguments for an equal rights treaty.

The women unfurled a banner bearing the inscription "we demand a treaty giving women their rights."

They also waved American and French flags.

They tried to march through the gateway to the Chateau close by but were stopped by officers who confiscated the banners, and Miss Stevens and her companion were taken to the police commissariat.
