POWER OF THE LADIES.—We copy, says the (New York Organ) the following extracts from an eloquent appeal to the friends of temperance contained in a Southern paper. In addressing the ladies, the speaker said:—

You have influence which may be felt throughout all our land—throughout all time. We know that the sphere in which it operates is different from ours—that it has none of the tumult and struggle which characterize the performance of the rougher and sterner duties of life, but it is not necessarily less important, and momentous in its results.—The greatest movements are not always those which are attended with the noisiest demonstrations. In what wonderful stillness is the whole economy of the natural world administered! Behold the vast machinery of the universe! with what infinite and inscrutable complexity it proceeds in its immutable course! Yet do we hear any noise or sound thereof? Such is your influence—quiet and unobtrusive as that of the stars, noiseless in its course as that of the sun, but a stream of life which may go forth to gladden and vivify all our land.

Lost health may be resumed by industry, the wreck of health be regained by temperance; forgotten knowledge restored by study; alienated friendship smoothed into forgetfulness; even forfeited reputation won by penitence. But who ever again looked upon his vanished hours, recalled his slighted years, stamped them with wisdom, or effaced from Heaven's record the fearful blot of wasted life?
