LETTER TO THE EDITOR OF THE PETERSBURG REPUBLICAN.
Washington City, December 2, 1811.
The chairman of the committee on Foreign Relations, gave notice this morning, that he would, on Thursday next, call for the consideration of the Report he made from that committee, a few days ago. A lengthy debate is not expected. Some federalists even, speak favourably of active preparations for WAR: and it is on all hands acknowledged, that the late demand of Great Britain, which is made a sine qua non of the repeal of her Orders in Council, is alike unprecedented and unwarrantable.
A compliance with it is not indeed within the power of this government. By what act of ours, if we were disposed to do so, could we procure the admission of British merchandizes into nations at war with Britain, when by the municipal regulations of those nations, such merchandizes are absolutely inhibited? The idea is preposterous, and the expression of it, much more the insisting on it, proves only the hostility of the British government towards the United States.
