GENTLEMEN WHIGS!—We have a word or two to say to you. Keep cool—keep good natured. If you are to be successful, you can afford to be pleasant—if you are to be beaten, it will not help to fret about it. You have fought three battles handsomely, viz: in North Carolina, Vermont, and Maine—the democrats have done the same in Alabama, Illinois, and Missouri. Now let us go into the smoke like men—each with a manly determination to sustain his cause as becomes a man—not with the childishness of children. That the democrats will flog you most unmercifully before the contest is ended, we are confident; but you have discovered a spirit in your cause that deserves consideration, and we wish to make your final and eternal downfall as easy as possible—therefore, do not bite your own noses off, in your joy at success, or despair at defeat.

The above good natured article we copy from the Boston (V. B.) Morning Post for the benefit of our readers; and contrast it with the annexed spiteful one from that pink of purity and courtesy the Hartford Times:

"Maine Election.—The Democrats of Maine have unwisely permitted themselves to fall into divisions in several districts, and nearly one third of their towns, at this important crisis. Relying in false security on their own strength and the professions of the enemy, they did not, in a large portion of their towns, carry out their organization and make those efforts that they have in former years. The federalists, more vigilant, have made a universal rally, and if they have not obtained a full victory, they have surprised the democrats."
