MONUMENT TO GOVERNOR JONES.--A few days since, "whilst meditating among the tombs" we happened to wander near the spot, where repose "beneath the cold clod of the valley," the ashes of the late Governor Jones. A monument from the chisel of Bolles, which probably has not thus far been excelled by an American artist, was some few years since erected, to perpetuate the memory of the tenant of the grave. The slab bears an epitaph which is remarkable for its chastity, and the arms of the family. This part of the work is extremely chaste, and is of itself enough to establish the reputation of the sculptor. But it has so happened, that some unprincipled person, actuated probably by a spirit of hostility towards the artist, has mutilated the tablet, broken off a leaf attached to the scroll, and defaced the animal, at the head of the arms of the family. We cannot conceive that there can be any one base enough to resort to a method like this to gratify feelings of hostility towards the mouldering form which reposes beneath the monument, but shall rather ascribe the act to some one disposed to injure the reputation of the artist. It has been an opinion of ours, which we have cherished from the cradle (and perhaps it may be a false one) that he who pursues a mortal to the grave and beyond it, or he who in the dark takes advantage of the mantle which veils him from the eye of Justice, to assassinate moral or professional reputation, "is a wretch whom 'twere gross flattery to call a coward."
