Gov. Marvin Griffin announced Monday that Georgia's National Guard with cars and airplanes will be called into use over the Labor Day week-end in an effort to preserve life on the highways.
Griffin declared: "I'm supposed to use the National Guard only in emergencies. Well, when it is estimated that 14 people will be killed in Georgia in one week-end, I think a real emergency exists and I want to save those 14 lives."
The governor conferred with Adj. Gen. Charlie F. Camp, and later disclosed that guardsmen with cars will be called to duty from each unit in the state to support the state patrol and local officers.
In addition, National Guard planes and helicopters will patrol the roads constantly. Each plane will be equipped with radio, enabling it to report traffic violations to officers on the ground.
