DUAL HIGHWAY TO DOVER NEXT

Approved at Washington for one of Four Major Jobs

R.R. CROSSINGS SURVEY

An announcement from Washington last week stated that Delaware's road schedule had been approved with those of nine other states to be linked with the Public Works program of the National Recovery Act. The State Highway Department submitted the schedule which included a tentative list of projects, to Secretary Ickes a fortnight ago. It is believed that all the four major projects of Delaware's schedule were approved.

These projects are: The by-pass highway to divert traffic around the mid-city centers to the Philadelphia Pike; completion of the dual highway from Smyrna to Dover; completion of the highway from the State Road to the Maryland line, and widening of roads from Dover to Rehoboth and Dover to Delmar. Mr. Mack, of the State Highway Department, expects to receive the official list of approved projects from Washington soon. The State Highway Department shortly will receive a report from a committee appointed recently to make a survey of the grade crossings and to decide on the several proposals for elimination. The committee is composed of W. W. Mack, chief engineer of the State Highway Department; Edwin F. Koester, engineer of the Street and Sewer Department, and Walter D. Smith, manager of the Safety Council. In Washington last week Delaware was allotted $1,819,088 of Federal money for road construction and improvements and it is believed that some of this appropriation may be used to eliminate the crossings. Among the proposals are the following: Christiana avenue cut-off of the Pennsylvania railroad along the causeway where two deaths have occurred since 1927: one of the heaviest traversed railroad grade crossings in the State and one where the most numerous delays traffic occur. Baltimore and Ohio railroad tracks at Belvedere where two deaths have occurred since 1927. Baltimore and Ohio Railroad crossing at Elsmere where one man was hurt last Sunday and whose recovery is said to be doubtful. The old Wilmington and Northern railroad crossing on the road between Montchanin and Adams dam: this would be an underpass. The Baltimore and Ohio railroad crossing along the Talley road: this would be an underpass. Another improvement project under consideration is the proposed cut-off from Market to French Street, south of the Pennsylvania Railroad elevated tracks, which would be known as Water street and be part of the industrial highway project. A condemnation commission reported on this project recently and was discharged by the directors of the Street and Sewer Department. Another commission will be appointed.
