Full Text
On Mr. SECRETARY PITT.
No longer, Britain, mourn thy statesmen dead,
Nor boast of Stanhope's heart, and Burleigh's
Virtue and Wisdom here supremely sit;
(head:)
To raise thy honour, in thy genius, Pitt:
To raise thy reputation from the dust,
And make great George successful as he's just,
Above corruption and its wily train,
Nor can court sorceries his heart detain:
Serene, but when his country is his aim
The patriot glows, his bosom is all flame;
His eloquence in charming freedom's right,
Full as the tide, and prevalent as light;
And when he speaks rude factions to compose.
It melts and penetrates like winter's snows,
His verse as nervous as his style is neat,
Sublime, not tumid, smooth without deceit
When blooming peace resumes the favoured isle.
And all her laughing pleasures bless the land:
He'll form new laws to make us still more blest,
Laws for mankind, the wisest and the best;
Trade in new seas shall tell what he has done.
His fame Shall with the car of Phæbus run.
No longer, Britain, mourn thy statesmen dead,
Nor boast of Stanhope's heart, and Burleigh's
