FIELD INSPECTION
A.&M College, Miss. Aug. 15.
Applications for field inspection of sweet potatoes are pouring in from growers who expect to sell seed sweet potatoes or potato plants next year, according to report from the State Plant Board office today.
These field inspections are necessary to determine whether Stem Rot, one of the serious potato diseases, is present in a field and no certificates are issued to a grower for selling seed potatoes or potato plants unless his field passes a satisfactory inspection. The Plant Board is urging all growers to send in their applications before August 25 in order to have plenty of time to make the inspection before frost, as Stem Rot cannot be detected after the vines are killed.
Getting applications in early also helps the Plant Board save time and expense, as some of the inspectors have charge of as many as seven or eight counties and by knowing in advance just what growers want inspections they can arrange their schedule and keep from making long expensive, duplicate trips. Application blanks, already addressed and ready for mailing, can be obtained from county agents or from any bank in Mississippi and should be mailed in at once.
