Arrived schooner Tom, Liddle, 23 days from La Guayra. Sailed 19th March, after a second embargo of ten days. Two days before sailing, accounts were received of the defeat of the Patriots about thirty miles from Caracas. The Royalists account states it to have been a complete rout, that they had made 500 prisoners, all of whom were put to the sword, and had taken 800 horses, the principal part of the baggage, Bolivar's private baggage; and among the rest, three hundred women attached to the Patriots were found next morning in the mountains. The particulars of the defeat had just been published, but Captain L. could not obtain a copy, nor could he learn that any officers of distinction were among the prisoners. It was stated that a ruse de guerre had been effected by General Morillo, by abandoning Calaboso, which drew the Patriots into an ambush between the two mountains. Morillo had been wounded in some of the previous battles.
