"Gentlemen of the Livery. After the repeated marks of confidence you have been pleased to confer upon me, a confidence which I esteem the greatest honour of my life, I flatter myself you will add to them the belief that I consented to be proposed as one of the persons to be returned to the Court of Aldermen for their choice of a chief Magistrate of this city for the year ensuing, from motives, neither of personal vanity, nor private ambition. Such would be highly unbecoming in me, highly ungrateful to you. 'Permit me therefore to lay before you my real inducements."
"Mr. Wilkes, whose high merit I revere as a citizen, and admire as a friend, I consider as the distinguished choice of the people at large, of the Livery of London in particular. To effectuate that choice as far as lies in my power, I esteem not only my duty, but my greatest pleasure and honour, especially at a time of so great importance as the present, from the approach of the general election."
"With this view, and with this alone, I submit myself to your pleasure in being again united with that Gentleman."
"We have together been repeatedly honoured by a respectable majority of our fellow citizens,"
"The cause in which we are embarked is of the greatest public moment, being in opposition to men and measures, evidently hostile to the fundamental principles of the English constitution. In such a contest we hope to be thought free from the imputation of factious or ambitious views; and assure yourselves that your success will stand on record an indelible and everlasting witness to the fortitude, the patriotism, and independence of the livery of London."
