COLUMBUS:
Wednesday Morning, March 17, 1852.
"The Lord deliver us from the firebrand apostles of peace, and these despotic and tyrannical missionaries of liberty! Is the Western world too confined a theatre for the practical enterprise of the Yankees? And is there not room in the wide Pacific for their buccaneers? Will nothing content them but coming to Europe as they have attempted to do to Cuba?"
Thus discoursed the London Morning Post, of the 24th December. Is the Western world too confined a theatre for American enterprise? The American heart promptly answers that the principles of republican liberty brought to this continent two hundred years ago, and nursed in the wild forests among wild beasts, wild men and wild woods, have now to be a shining light in the world—a city upon a hill which cannot be hid.
The indecent libel, however, contained in the above quotation, is but a specimen of what the aristocratic journals of the world speak of us. Let them rave, however. The time is coming, and from all the signs, is not far distant, when Hugo's prediction that the United States of America on our side, and the United States of Europe, on the other, will shake hands across oceans; and the universal brotherhood of mankind will dwell in safety and peace, knowing war no more.
