Cheyenne, Wyo., Jan 8.--A News representative, upon an invitation from Messrs. Altman and McUlvan, owners of the celebrated Hereford ranch, seven miles east of this city, paid a visit to the ranch yesterday afternoon to witness the operation of inoculating a bunch of eighty-five head of calves against black leg. The virus or vaccine used is prepared artificially from a secretion of the bacilli of black leg, and is injected into the animal by means of a hypodermic syringe; the neck, or rather between the neck and shoulder, being the most convenient and usually chosen place for the inoculation. The treatment consists of two injections about ten days apart, the first being a very mild dose, and the second a very strong solution of the virus. The calves at the Hereford ranch yesterday received their second dose, and were immediately turned out in a pasture, seemingly not at all discommoded by the operation. The operation of injecting the virus is a very simple one and soon performed. The calves were driven into a pen, the operator, in this case Mr. Altman, inserted the needle of the little syringe into the shoulder of each one and the deed was done. Messrs. Altman and McUlvan are perfectly sure that their beautiful herd of calves are safe from black leg and are correspondingly happy. The Hereford ranch is an ideal place for the breeding of fine cattle, every convenience, excellent shelter, plenty of pure water and good feed making the ranch as near a bovine paradise as can be imagined.
