OF THE PEOPLE. AT WISCASSET ON THE EVENING OF THE 26th, of December.
Agreeably to a previous call, a large number of the people of Lincoln County assembled at the Court House, at Wiscasset on the 26th Dec. to take into consideration the alarming state of public affairs. and to respond to the nomination of William Henry Harrison and John Tyler. -
The best feeling prevailed and all present were animated with the patriotic spirit of changing the Administration of the Country and bringing into power, men who will preserve inviolate the constitution and laws, and save the Republic from the despotism which threatens to overthrow it.
The meeting was called to order by Judge Bailey of Wiscasset.
Moses Carlton Esq. was chosen Chairman and Ephraim W. Farley and John Babson were appointed secretaries of the meeting.
On motion, a Committee was raised, consisting of Hon. John Holmes, Hon. J. Bailey and Hon. Stephen Parsons, to draft resolutions, expressive of the feelings of the meeting -- who having attended to that duty, reported the following Resolutions which were unanimously adopted :
Resolved, That a specie currency for commercial transactions' of this commercial people, is all a delusion, and the attempt to enforce such a system, must inevitably result in the substitution of bad paper for good, and tend to the derangement of negociations, destroy confidence and paralyze enterprize.
Resolved, That to collect and disburse the revenues in specie, is to benefit the officers, to the prejudice of the people, and let loose a horde of official speculators to lure or compel us to submission to executive power.
Resolved, That the embarrassed and deranged state of the currency is owing mainly to the interference of the General Government.
Resolved, That we have witnessed with alarm, the officious interference and influence of officers and agents of the General and State Governments, at the elections and that it ought to excite the jealousy of the people, lest these things should establish an executive power dangerous to liberty.
Resolved, That the public revenues have been prodigally squandered, in entrusting the collection and disbursement, to irresponsible and unfaithful agents and in bestowing the funds upon unprincipled favorites as a reward for political and partisan services.
Resolved, That from such prodigal and unfaithful administration, we are incurring a national debt, which must be reimbursed in taxes, and while the people of this State are threatened with oppressive taxation to meet the State debt and its current expenses, we are alarmed at the prospect of additional burdens from the General Government.
Resolved, That from such management of such guardians, we have little hope, that the just limits of this State will be defined and established and while we participate in the common calamity and are subject to the same disasterous misrule as other states, we are involved in dangerous and difficulties, peculiar to ourselves and from which we have not the most distant prospect of relief, so long as the present administration remains in power.
Resolved, That to effect a change of measures so destructive to the property, and dangerous to the liberties of the people, our only means are a change of men and to this end, we pledge ourselves, to support William H. Harrison for President and John Tyler for Vice President, and we will use all fair and honorable means to sustain them.
Resolved, That we recognize in the character, talents, and public services of Gen. Harrison the devoted soldier, the faithful patriot, the pure consistent republican and the poor man's friend -- a man who in the councils and the field has devoted his property and the most of his life, to the service of his country.
Resolved, That we recognize in Mr. Tyler, a republican of the true school, who has in both houses of Congress maintained and defended his country's rights and who has sustained, with high reputation the highest honors that Virginia could bestow.
Resolved, That our object is inquiry into the courses of our present public and individual embarrassments and the disappearing so mysteriously of our public funds, lately so ample and overflowing and the distrust, jealousy and alarm, which pervades all our commercial relations -- and we entertain no hope, that such inquiry will be faithful and effectual, until this administration and its policy shall be radically changed.
Resolved, That these resolutions be published in the papers in this State, whose principles accord with those herein embraced.
On motion. of Col. Hilton of Wiscasset the following resolution was unanimously adopted:
Resolved, That we recommend to the Whigs of Lincoln County, the Lincoln Telegraph and Thomaston Republican, as papers worthy of their support and patronage, during the coming Presidential election.
The meeting was eloquently addressed by Lucius H. Chandler, Col. Foote, Hon. John Holmes, and others, and every individual present, seemed impressed with a determination, to support the nominations of Gen. Harrison and John Tyler.
