WASHINGTON--Association of American Railroads has announced Class I railroads last year installed in service 2,110 new locomotive units--a decrease of 955 units when compared with the 3,065 units installed in 1952.
Of the new locomotive units put in service in 1953, there were 2,091 diesel-electric, 15 steam and four gas turbine-electric.
The Class I railroads had 571 new locomotive units on order Jan. 1, 1954. These included 546 diesel-electric units, 10 electric and 15 gas turbine-electric. On Jan. 1, 1953, Class I railroads had 958 new locomotive units on order--914 diesel-electric, 15 steam, 10 electric and 19 gas turbine-electric.
