Rights Stand As
"Unequivocal"
Washington, Jan. 6—Hailing President's State of the Union message to Congress as "unequivocal re-affirmation of your stand for civil rights", Walter White, NAACP secretary, congratulated the Chief Executive upon his address to a joint session of both houses of Congress here today.
"I am certain that the majority of the American people support your demand for civil rights legislation." Mr. White said in a wire to the president. "It is equally certain that the members of Congress who are loyal to their oath to support the spirit as well as the words of the Constitution will rally to your support regardless of party affiliation."
The NAACP secretary also praised the president for request for repeal of the Taft-Hartley labor control act and for enactment of such social welfare measures as Federal aid to education, public and private housing, health insurance, raising of the minimum wage to 75 cents an hour, and broadening of the coverage of the Social Security Act.
