Full Text

A committee has been appointed in the Legislature of Massachusetts "to consider the expediency of building a ship of the line of 74 guns, to be called the Massachusetts, and of offering the same, when completed, to the government of the United States to be employed by them during the present war with Great Britain." So soon as the appointment of this committee was known the mouth pieces of the British faction in Boston set out in full cry against it, as vociferously as they did against the loan of eleven millions-Mad men! what are you doing, cry they. Dare you move a finger in support of a government that has had the temerity to declare war against the bulwark of our religion, our last hope? What will our Lord Castlereagh say to this? It must never be. Our allegiance is due to Britain alone! If you concur in this, all that our friend 'Timothy, and crazy Jack and others have done to raise our reputation with our royal master, goes for nothing. It will make my Lord Castlereagh and our friends in Parliament suspect that our professions of attachment to the royal cause, are as hollow as our professions of patriotism-that our professions are all words; mere idle words! Pause! pause! for heaven's sake pause!"-And if the brawlings of these whippers in of toryism has any effect, we shall hear no more of the ship of the line-no more of co-operation in the war-no note of military preparation, unless Captain General Strong should conceive the public good requires his marching to the succour of our red brethren, the magnanimous allies of the bulwark of our religion!
