Our sprightly contemporary of the Ann Advertiser indulges in the following "praise and blame" of Democratic newspapers. It affords us pleasure to place on record his flattering allusion to The Cairo Bulletin. He says:
The small-fry newspapers in this section are pitching into the Chicago Times, because it sensibly says that "the Democratic party received its full shock of the negro vote in the recent elections without being hurt by this African mitrailleuse," and one of these hebdomadal concerns gives utterance to its sentiments thusly. "The Times and its acquiescing progressive"—(the latter the Cairo Bulletin) echo must also be shocked at this result. Unless I see the acquiescing Times and the "progressive Bulletin," they (the small fry) take a back seat and behold the result! But for such able paper as the Times and Bulletin no victories of importance would come to the Democratic party now in its dotage—premature age having been forced upon the organization by such would-be leaders as those who manage small-fry newspapers. We like the Times and every other fearless, outspoken journal, Peace or Republican. Small souls, who cannot rise to the height of an original echo, always take up the tail end of everything and slink back into dark corners, behind hidden projections, fearing lest they may be called upon for an intelligent defense. From these hidden recesses issue forth the "shocking" sounds about which we have been told so often of late. The Times and Bulletin ought to stop publishing reasoning articles, and go back to the good old primitive days, when people looked no further than the tip of their noses, and, as for thinking for themselves, why that was out of the question. Wasn't everything written down? and didn't the marginal notes tell them just what to believe? If you are thinking readers, you have no business with the Times and Bulletin. They will blister your minds sure. On the other hand, if you are intelligent, unprejudiced men, we know the small-fry organs will be taken for just what they are worth—and then cast away.
