Chester News: "It is surprising what people will do to avoid buying license tags for their automobiles," said State Highway Inspector Frank Wilkes as he showed The News a 1926 tag which had been changed to resemble a 1927 tag. The party, who lives at the Red River mills, near Rock Hill, had taken his 1926 tag and smoothed out the "6," converting it into a "7," and had painted the old tag the color of the new tags—a rather artistic job, too.
This year's tags are smaller than last year's and on account of this Inspector Wilkes noticed it. The man who had endeavored to avoid buying a 1927 tag was fined $35.
