McMillan Wins Senate Okeh As Postmaster

The United States Senate Friday confirmed the appointment of retired Marine Brig. Gen. Hoyt S. Middleton as postmaster at Conway.

A nephew of R. D. J. McMillan, the well-known Marion officer was selected by his uncle for the temporary appointment and he has been serving in that capacity for six months.

His recommendation by President Kennedy to the Senate was expected as early as last March, but then, three sets of Senate post office appointments were announced and McMillan was not among them.

An administrative foul-up was another explanation given by an official in the post office department as a cause for the delay.

Whatever the reason, the Senate Post Office Committee, headed by Sen. Olin D. Johnston, sent the nomination to the Senate Thursday, and confirmation was assured Friday.

Speculation also arose in Washington that objections from hunting and fishing interests in Henry County, Ga., might have delayed the confirmation before it was made.

It was thought to be up to noon to see how Rep. McMillan voted on the farm bill although this was originally denied. Rep. McMillan voted up on the farm bill and the nomination still remained in committee.

South Carolina information had objections to the temporary appointment because they said Rep. McMillan had supported Richard M. Nixon, Republican, for president in 1960.

There was some surmise that the White House might be holding up the confirmation.

The United States Senate confirmed the appointment of retired Marine Brig. Gen. Hoyt S. Middleton as postmaster at Conway. Middleton, nephew of R. D. J. McMillan, had been serving temporarily for six months after selection by his uncle. The recommendation by President Kennedy was delayed from last March due to administrative foul-up and possible objections from hunting and fishing interests in Henry County, Ga., and South Carolina concerns over McMillan's support for Nixon in 1960. The Senate Post Office Committee, headed by Sen. Olin D. Johnston, sent the nomination Thursday, with confirmation Friday.
