A Letter from Lisbon, dated July 8, says, "On the Arrival of the Lord Clive and her Consorts in the River Plate, they were opposed by the following Ships, which, after a short Contest, surrendered, viz. the Conception of Ark, of 1100 Tons Burden, mounting 50 Guns, commanded by Sig. Don Joseph Fostere; the St. Barbara, of 800 Tons, mounting 28 Guns, commanded by --, the Sambroune, of 700 Tons, mounting 30 Guns, commanded by Sig. Don Roquey Sambroune, the St. Pedro, of 600 Tons, mounting 20 Guns, commanded by Sig. Don Domingo; and the Vigilante, of 600 Tons, mounting 28 Guns, commanded by Sig. Don Roguey St. Maarten, which by some Accident fired, but was soon extinguished. These Ships had taken in Part of their Loading for Europe, consisting of Mahogany Plank, raw Hides, Cocoa, and Cochineal. The above Privateers then proceeded to attack Nova Colonia, and after six Hours Bombardment the Fort Surrendered: The Ships received Some inconsiderable Damage; but being Spirited with their Success, resolved to repair with all Expedition, and proceed immediately to attack Buenos Ayres."
