A seventh killing has marked the
mounting tide of terrorism in Georgia
as unions and other organizations
throughout the country offered increasing
rewards for information concerning the
mob that lynched two Negro couples in
Monroe July 25.

The latest murder victim was Sutter
Matthews, a sawmill worker in Worth
County, adjoining Monroe.

Matthews' body was found laid across
the railroad tracks, his head across
one rail, his feet across the other. A
train ran over him before it could be
stopped but subsequent investigation
led to the conclusion that Matthews
was dead before he was put on the
rails.

Deputy Sheriff T. V. Beard said he
had discovered a bad wound behind
Matthews' ear and believed he had
been killed by a blunt instrument.

The county coroner, however, closed
the case with a verdict of death by
unknown cause.

The Monroe lynchings continued to
remain unsolved as the FBI was reported
pouring an additional 25 agents into the
area in an effort to pinpoint the lynchers.
There were reports that the new truth
serum, sodium pentothal, may be used to
get information from reluctant witnesses.

Union members and progressives,
growing increasingly angry at the
failure of authorities to crack the
case, have offered large awards for
information leading to apprehension
of the lynchers. The National Association
for Advancement of Colored People has
posted a $10,000 reward, the National
Maritime Union has offered $5,000, the
Negro newspaper Chicago Defender, $2,000,
the Civil Rights Congress, $1,000 and the
American Civil Liberties Union, $1,000.
All these are in addition to the $10,000
offered by the state of Georgia.
