Ode against the French.
From the manuscript Poems of Mr. Dunham.
See Gallia's host, on rebel wing,
Wading in blood, through crimes unknown;
Who make a victim of their king
And frightful scaffold of their throne:
At crimes, like theirs, see heav'n's just
Nor let its vengeful thunders sleep,
Already have her conquering arms
Spread death and desolation round
Nations submit at her alarms;
Her mad ambition knows no bound:
Astonish'd Europe hugs the chain,
And yields the empire of the main.
Rise Albion! rise! with terror's arm!
Avenge thine own and Europe's cause
'Tis thine to still the loud alarm,
And crush those tyrants of the laws,
Let lightnings seize this impious clan!
Go:—and avenge the Rights of Man.
Aided by Daemons, loose from hell,
Already have this chief's proud band
Sent ruin and desolation's steel,
Round the wide sea, and o'er the land
And by a thousand battles won,
Thousands of thousands are undone!
But Heav'n, enrag'd, will check their pride;
Columbia will not brook it long;
Here will the torrent turn its tide,
And Frenchmen bleed: avenge our wrong;
Their bones will bleach along the plain
Enrich'd with blood of legions slain.
