Jesse Duall Run Down by a Freight Train at the South Market Street Crossing and Both Legs Cut Off--Death Results.
Jesse Duall, the well known railroad contractor and grader, died at his home on Jackson street, near Cherry, at 4:30 o'clock this morning, death resulting from a shock and injuries received about 8 o'clock Tuesday night, when Duall was run down by a freight train on the Pittsburgh, Ft. Wayne & Chicago Railroad at the South Market street crossing and both his legs were cut off.
Duall had been working at grading some bridge approaches on the road between North Industry and Bolivar. Monday afternoon he and his son walked to Canton, arriving home about supper time. After supper Duall started up-town, walking up Jackson and then Market streets. Just about eight he reached the railroad track. He was walking up the west side of the street rather meditatively, and had just stepped upon the track when the shrill whistle of a locomotive, approaching from the west and which was but a few feet from him, warned him of danger. He stopped transfixed for a moment and then drew back, but too late. The pilot struck him and he tried in vain to secure a hold upon it. He was thrown prostrate, both his legs below the knees lying across the track, and was dragged along for some distance by the wheels. The train was stopped and Duall picked up and carried into Koons' drug store, where Dr. Leininger, who was driving by, was called in to see him. Both legs were badly crushed and the spine injured. Dr. Leininger had Duall removed to his home and summoned Drs. Brant and Johnson for consultation. After doing all in their power to relieve the intense suffering of the wounded man they amputated his left leg below the knee and his right leg above the ankle. The operations were commenced about midnight and the physicians did not leave the house until 2 o'clock this morning. At 4:30 o'clock this morning Duall died.
The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon from the residence. Duall was fifty-six years old and leaves a wife and several sons. Until recently he lived at Paris, Stark county.
While lying in bed Tuesday night Duall said that had he ran forward instead of drawing back when the engineer whistled he believed he could have escaped.
This makes the third fatal accident on this railroad near Canton since Saturday.
