Adjutant General's Report.-This immense work is fast approaching completion. The first volume containing 1127 pages of closely printed matter has reached the General's office and from a short review of it we should say it is about as near perfect as a work of the kind could be. Sure it is that Gen. Baker has spent a vast amount of care and attention upon it, aided by a large corps of competent assistants and clerks. It is a faithful military record in which no one is favored above another. Just as much pains has been taken to have the names of the privates correctly printed, and his history as fully given, as there has been with the superior officers. The history of each is brief but comprehensive. Every man who has enlisted or received an appointment has his record printed there, and he or his posterity after him will be able to turn to it years and years hence. The bad is published with the good. It is a work of the utmost importance, though its true value will not be fully appreciated during the present generation. It is a record that coming generations in this noble State will scan with the deepest feelings of pride and emotion. We have had an opportunity to compare this report with that made by the Adjutant General of the great State of New York for the year 1862. There is nothing gained by the comparison by the Empire State. She only gives the names of the officers, the date of commission and rank. The private soldier-they who have to do the fighting and win the glory are ignored as though they did not exist. There is a third more matter in the first volume of Gen. Baker's report than in all of the report alluded to. We congratulate Gen. Baker upon the splendid order in which he has executed this task. A work of so much importance should be done in no other way.
