"Be thou perpetual" was the exclamation of Paul Sarpi in his dying moments. His patriotism must be applauded, if he meant the happiness of his country. But if he alluded to that dark and horrible system, which, boasting the precious name of a republic, has long oppressed, and still continues to oppress the Venetians with aristocratical tyranny, his prayer, however well-intended was the result of a very weak understanding. The Venetian people are perhaps at this day the most abject in the world; and, were they capable of reflection, would contemplate with envy the security of a Spanish peasant, and the happiness of a Russian vassal.
