New York Garbage
Feeds Fish Food

MADISON, Wis.-At a meeting of the American Institute of Biological Sciences, Dr. Charles Powers reported that garbage flowing into the sea from New York has a silver lining. It makes for good fishing outside the harbor.

"Since the area is just off New York harbor, refuse such as garbage from the city continually flows out into the ocean. This so-called polluted water is actually beneficial because it serves as a fertilizer for the microscopic creatures which fish feed on, and makes good feeding ground in the area."

There's another good reason for excellent fishing in the area, he reports.

There's a strong prevailing wind in the area that carries surface water off and causes the deeper water to rise, bringing the choice fish closer to the surface.
