Goodyear Local Home Dedication Attended By Big Throng

A crowd estimated at more than 10,000 persons was attracted to the remodeled home of Goodyear Local 2, United Rubber Workers, last Friday to inspect the building and to participate in the dedication ceremony.

The building, which is located at 7 Goodyear Blvd., is said to be the finest and most complete URW local headquarters in the country. The remodeling cost was $300,000.

Emil Mazey, secretary-treasurer of the United Auto Workers, delivered the dedication address in the absence of UAW President Walter Reuther who was forced to cancel his Akron appearance because of illness.

Apparently aiming his remarks at Jimmy Hoffa, leading candidate for election to the presidency of Teamsters Union, he called for the ouster of union leaders who have betrayed their trust.

"They are using their power for selfish and personal gains, and they are giving a black eye to the entire Labor movement," Mazey declared after mentioning Dave Beck, retiring Teamsters head, and Hoffa by name.

"They should be driven out of the Labor movement just as quickly as we can do the job."

Mazey was introduced to the capacity crowd in the auditorium by L. S. Buckmaster, international president of URW.

An eight-act vaudeville show was another feature of the dedication program.

Public inspection of the remodeled headquarters was started at 10 A. M. and continued throughout the day.

Scores of Civic, Industrial and Labor leaders were in the throng.

The dedication speaker also took a crack at the McClellan Senate Committee that was named for the purpose of investigating racketeering by both management and labor.

"For every crooked Labor leader, there is an equally crooked person in management," he declared, "but the Senate committee thus far has done little or nothing to root them out," he said. "It seems that different yardsticks are being used to measure their misdeeds. All that we ask is equal treatment.

"And it is a mistake to judge the many in Labor by the few," he continued. "For every crooked Labor leader there are hundreds whose integrity and loyalty cannot be questioned."

Local 2, largest local union in the
URW, moved into its present Good-
year Blvd. headquarters in 1955. By
membership vote, the local officers
last Fall were directed to carry out
a remodeling program to make this
the best URW local headquarters in
the country."

Nothing has been overlooked in the
face-lifting. The basement of the
three-story building has been com-
pletely done over to include a new
kitchen, a dance floor and numerous
meeting rooms for pensioners and
youth groups.

In announcing his inability to at-
tend the dedication ceremonies, Presi-
dent Reuther said he would visit the
headquarters as soon as his health
and his other commitments would
permit.
