RETREAT OF THE MUSES.
FOR THE ALEXANDRIAN.
THE WANDERER'S GRAVE.
Retired and lonely's the spot,
Where the wand'rer in silence reposes,
His grief and his sorrows forgot,
In the grave that his relics encloses.
No tears of a brother are shed
Where the dark weeds neglectingly wave;
No friend ever mourns for the dead
Or visits the wand'rer's lone grave.
No father's or mother's affection
Was here ever told with a tear;
For 'twas the youth's sad recollection
He'd left all who'd mourn'd o'er his bier.
He had left them in hope's brightest hour
When fancy illumin'd the scene;
But alas! like the immature flower
Dark winter had nipp'd it while green.
And blighted with it the ripe bloom
That lit up his features of joy.
Till nought but the dark-closing tomb
Could griefs of the wand'rer destroy.
He often had thought of the friends
Whom he had loved with sincerity true,
But a sad retrospect only lends
To despondency a still darker hue.
And now he's forgotten his griefs
And the sad recollections they gave,
And calmly and silently sleeps
In a place call'd the wanderer's grave.
