On Saturday last, the Business of the General Assembly being finished, his Honour the President gave his Assent to the Bill for the Relief of the Sufferers by the Loss of the Tobacco damaged or burnt in several Warehouses, and to such other Bills and Resolves as were ready, and then closed the Session with the following Speech.
Gentlemen of the Council, Mr. Speaker, and Gentlemen of the House of Burgesses,
I am now to return you my Thanks for the Readiness with which you have entered upon the Business I recommended to you, and for your constant Attention and Application to it. I am persuaded that your Conduct on this Occasion will be highly approved by your Country in general, and that those who will be relieved by the Act that is passed for that Purpose will always think of you with Honour and Gratitude.
Before I part with you let me entreat the Favour of your Assistance, in your different Departments, to preserve the Peace, Order, and good Government, in your several Counties, which I have the Pleasure to observe have subsisted during my short Administration.
I will not detain you longer than to acquaint you that I have thought fit to prorogue this Assembly to the fourth Thursday in October next; and it is, accordingly, prorogued to that Time.
