BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - (SNS)
White delegates to the Southern Negro Youth Congress reported that they were refused accommodation in Birmingham white hotels and others with previous reservations were notified for cancellation.
The Elks Rest notified SNYC officials that they had to refund their deposit on the hall for a dance slated for Saturday night because of pressure from the City Hall.
In an unforeseen development growing out of the SNYC meeting, Rev. H. Douglas Oliver, pastor of the Alliance Gospel Tabernacle, is believed to have lost his church. SNYC officials said they would start a movement to build him a youth church.
Rev. Paul E. Turner, pastor of the Youth Church in Chicago, offered the first $1,000 towards the Youth Church Fund.
Rev. Glenn V. Tingley, white pastor of the Alliance Tabernacle, assailed Douglas in a broadcast over Radio Station WKAX.
The minister asked the ouster of Rev. Douglas, son of a prominent local business man, for letting the SNYC hold political meetings in the church.
A. D. Slotes, Birmingham Negro Attorney, will defend Senator Glen Taylor in Recorder Court here tonight.
