"We learn that the hail storm on Monday, the 28th ult. was most tremendous on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, destroying in some places every hope of a harvest. Whole fields of wheat were literally cut down, and rendered unfit for gathering. Such was the size of the hail, that a very large number of cattle were killed, and many others maimed."
The Chestertown Telegraph of the 2d instant says:—"About 2 o'clock on Monday last, some parts of this county were visited by one of the most tremendous and destructive hail storms experienced in this part of the country for many years. The cloud which approached from the north west extended over a space of from one to two miles wide. The hail stones in some places, we are informed, averaged the size of walnuts—many were much larger—and being driven by a hurricane of wind, wherever it passed, levelled the wheat and corn with the ground, shattering and tearing it in a distressing manner. Fields of wheat which bade fair to yield hundreds of bushels, are totally destroyed, not a bushel saved.—The loss is great and will be severely felt by many. The wind blew tremendously, prostrating houses, trees, fences, &c. in its course. We have heard of many out buildings on different farms being blown down, also the saw mill and part of the grist mill of Mr. James Urie at the head of Morgan's Creek. Fowls which happened to be exposed were killed, and many dead birds were found after the storm. No person was injured that we have heard of. We have only received intelligence from a part of the district through which the hail passed, and cannot therefore give a minute detail of the damage sustained. In this place we had very little hail, but a heavy shower of rain and a strong wind."
