Miscellany.
FOR THE ENQUIRER.
To MISS -, ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF HER BIRTH DAY--MAY--1805.
I.
Lo! from the bosom of the spring,
With rosy lip and fragrant wing,
Descends enchanting May;
Around her, vernal roses breathe,
Her fairest flowers she seems to wreathe,
To grace thy natal day.
II.
Thro' azure skies, the genial sun,
Proud, his effulgent race to run,
Directs his daz'ling car;
Soft zephyrs blow, bright colours blend,
And tempests for a while suspend
Their wild, tumultuous war.
III.
Spontaneous beauties gild the globe,
And deck her variegated robe,
With each attractive die:
Still is wild winter's wasteful strife,
And nought but renovated life,
Invites the ravish'd eye.
IV.
Hark! from the grove, with dulcet voice,
The warbling choristers rejoice,
Or mount on buoyant wing;
Along old ocean's tranquil tides,
The mariner securely glides,
The verdant valleys ring.
V.
Auspicious emblems! may they prove,
The faithful harbingers of love,
And future bliss to thee:
May every joy thy wishes crown,
And chase the stormy clouds that frown
On life's tempestuous sea.
VI.
May Virtue, faithful pilot, steer,
Thy course thro' each revolving year,
And each succeeding day;
And when the scenes of life are o'er,
May Angel's waft thee to the shore,
Where blooms eternal MAY.
