Full Text

Immense numbers of Indians had collected about Huron, (Michigan,) the week preceding July 5th. On the 2d, five hundred descended the rapids in the bark canoes, and encamped on this side on the St. Clair, and in Canada. They are chiefly Chippewas from Saginaw. Huron was once their hunting grounds. Some of them are now nearly starving. The inhabitants gave them no liquor.

We cannot but commiserate these wandering Aborigines, driven from post to pillar—from Dan to Beersheba, for the last two hundred years, by the ten conquering Anglo Saxon race. The beautiful lines of Rogers, in his Pleasures of Memory, alluding to their fate, are constantly recalled to the imagination.
