"Like To Keep Myself Free MBC Issue, Says Bishop Greene"
BY EMORY O. JACKSON
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -(SNS)-
Bishop S L. Green, recently transferred from Alabama to Georgia by the AME Bishops Council said here Monday that "I would like to keep myself free" in the matter of Morris Brown College of Atlanta.
He said that the action taken by the council, should not be interpreted as meaning either the restoration of former president William Fountain or a denial of the sixth district bishop that authority to use his judgment in the matter. But that he was inclined to let things remain in status quo until he studies the situation with a mind and heart to do what his wisdom tells him is best for Morris Brown.
The bishop is scheduled to be in Atlanta before or on March 14 to begin his duties. However his duties over Georgia AMe's began at the time of the decision of the council.
At a December meeting of the Board of Trustees at Morris Brown, upon the insistence of Bishop Wright, that body voted 22 to 2 to oust Dr Fountain from the presidency.
Failing to follow an earlier directive of the Bishops' Council, Bishop Wright was recently transferred from Georgia to the Arkansas-Oklahoma diocese.
E. C. Mitchell, associated with the college in the capacity as dean and teacher, was last June, elected vice-president, later acting president. Finally in December, the Trustees elevated him to the full status of President.
What course the new bishop will follow is a big question mark in the minds of AME's of Atlanta and Georgia. As far as can be gathered opinion seem to be sharply divided. Many influential Georgians are inclined to the view that to restore Fountain to his post would be detrimental to the best interests of AME's. On the other hand, others hold that the Fountains have brought Morris Brown from an obscure, struggling school to a first-rate college.
