Associated Press Cites Five Football Players

During the recent football season several Tiger footballers have been outstanding. In the last week five were honored by The Associated Press with selection to the Small College All State team.

There were three first team selections taken from the Tiger roster and two honorable mentions. Fullback Lewis Everette, quarterback Freddie Mitchell, and tackle Otis Bradley were named to first team berths. End Joey Viar and guard Ken Pritchett were given honorable-mention awards.

Everette

For Everette the All State award is not a new experience. Lewis was named to the first team last year. This year he was also given an honorable mention Little All-American berth. one of four backs in Virginia and North Carolina to receive such recognition. He was presented the Bedford Jaycees award for the outstanding sportsmanship in Virginia small colleges, the second year a H-SC man has received the award.

Lewis was also the runner-up for the small college player of the year in Virginia. He was the state's leading ground gainer and one of the top scorers. His own teammates voted him the most valuable football player on the team for 1962.

Mitchell

Mitchell was no slouch in the honors receiving department himself. Freddie was voted the outstanding player in the first annual Tobacco Belt Bowl in Danville this year, a trophy he can add to the MVP he received in the Shrine Bowl in Richmond last year. Freddie was one of the top passers in the state this season and the number three point-getter for the year in the state. Two years ago he was voted to the second honor team of the Mason-Dixon Conference team.

Bradley

Bradley has been more accustomed to taking home wrestling honors than football ones. At the present time he is the undefeated, defending champion of the 191-pound class in Mason-Dixon wrestling. Otis has been beaten only once in three years, for the championship in his freshman year. He has been voted the most valuable wrestler in the conference for the past two years. and finished fifth in the AAU tournament in New York this past summer. However, his teammates saw Otis's football skill and voted him the best defensive-player award.

Coach Bill Pegram made the statement at the football banquet that the turning point of the Tiger season was when Otis got slugged in the Johns Hopkins game.

Pritchett

Pritchett is not a stranger to the small college all star team for last year he also received an honorable mention on the mythical team. Kenny has been one of the outstanding guards on the team for three seasons now as he lettered as a freshman.

Viar

Viar was the fifth Tiger to receive recognition by the AP. Joey was called by coach Fulton one of the best ends that the Tigers have seen in the past few years. Small for his position Viar came into his own during the 1962 season and bolstered the Tigers both offensively and defensively.
