It is not a matter of general knowledge that the United States is the owner and operator of actual producing mines.
Recently some attention has been attracted by the gift of a Pennsylvania coal mine to the Federal Bureau of Mines to facilitate its studies on coal-mining accidents and efficient mining methods.
For 3 or 4 years the U. S. government has owned and operated a coal mine in the western part of the island of Batan, off the east coast of Luzon.
The mine is under the control of the War Department, which is the administrator of the government's affairs in the Philippine islands. The coal is 51 ft. thick, dips about 13 degrees is almost smokeless, and contains only about 6 per cent ash.
The output is restricted to the needs of the U. S. military and naval service. Close at hand on the same island is another coal mine, owned by civilians which serve the needs of general commerce and industry.—Mining World.
