The new political year of Massachusetts commenced yesterday, agreeable to ancient usage. The two houses were assembled at the usual time, about 10 o'clock; but his excellency not appearing until a late hour, the business assigned to the two branches was necessarily protracted until near 12 o'clock.--The Legislature, however, being then organized, proceeded to the choice of their officers.
In the senate, the votes for President were 36, of which the Hon. Mr. Dana had 25, and was declared to be chosen. For secretary, whole number 35, of which Marcus Morton, Esquire, had 25, and was accordingly chosen. In the House, the whole number of votes for clerk, was 718, necessary to make a choice, 359, Benj. Pollard, Esq. had 425, and was declared chosen. Of course the majority was 68; and the plurality 137. C. P. Sumner Esq. was the opposing candidate. The votes for Speaker were 716, necessary to constitute a choice, 358, the Hon. Timothy Bigelow, Esq. had 423, and was accordingly chosen. The democratic candidate for speaker, was John Holmes Esq. of Alfred.--
A joint committee was then appointed to count and sort the votes for governor.
The two branches then assembled in convention, and being joined by the governor and council, formed a procession for the purpose of attending the religious duties of the day, which were performed by the Rev. Mr. Foster of Littleton. The escort duties were performed by the cadets, under col. Williams.
