Full Text

The McKinley Bill.

Washington, May 5. It is apparently the intention of the Republican majority to force through the McKinley tariff bill. The caucus to-day demonstrated that the bill must take precedence of everything else, and a vote is fixed at an early day in order to get action before more protests can be forwarded. The bill will, of course, be amended so much that it will be defeated. There is a possibility that the sugar men will force a restoration of the duty. They now have a strong lobby actively at work among the members, and every possible string is being pulled to carry it through. Amendments to the wool schedules will be offered, and it is possible that rates will be slightly reduced.
